What does it mean, “KNOW THE PERIOD”?

To know and appreciate a poet one must look at the place and time in which a poet wrote.

If we as people are the product of our environments, why would it be different for your poet?

What is the purpose of this research?

The purpose of this research is to understand the relationship between the poet’s work and the political, social and economic conditions

in which the poet’s work came out of.

The below 3 areas are examples of information required to be in this part of your research paper:

3.      What were the big political movements of the time (e.g. Anti-war, Labor rights, Civil rights, Human rights, Socialism, Communism, Gay rights)

4.      Was there political stability or instability in the United States (e.g. was there peace, or was there a war or potential conflict on the horizon)

5.      Was the government a positive or negative presence in the average American’s life

       Social Conditions:

1.      What were the social conditions like during the poet’s life

2.      Were there any discrimination issues that affected the poet (e.g. race, ethnicity, gender)

3.      What were the big social movements of the time (e.g. black power, feminist, environmental)

       Economic Conditions:

1.      What were the important economic issues of the time (e.g. the Great Depression, drought, stock market crash, unemployment)
